What is on the PCT exam?

The exam will consist of 100 scored items and 10 pretest items. You will be allowed 1 hour and 50 minutes to complete it. For examinees with conditions covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), you may request special testing accommodations.

How long does PCT certification last?

Applications and payments are valid for one year from the date of submission to NCCT. The practice of some professions may be regulated in certain states and it is your responsibility to determine whether this certification meets your state requirements for practice before taking it.

What is the difference between a PCT and a LPN?

Those individuals seeking a career as a LPN, require 2 years of training and a NCLEX-PN certificate. In contrast to PCTs, who can learn through on the job training or undergo training through community colleges, qualifying as a certified nursing assistants.

How long does it take to become a CNA?

Generally, most certified nursing assistant programs take between four and 12 weeks. This is broken into instructional hours and clinical practice. A typical 120-hour CNA program offered over six weeks may include four weeks in class and two weeks in a clinical setting, depending on state guidelines.

How long does it take a PCT to become a RN?

It will take 2 to 3 years to complete the educational requirements for a PCT to become an RN. You may need additional time to study for the state’s nursing exam.

Can a PCT put IV?

A PCT is certified through the board of nursing as a CNA as well, but has received formal or informal training on how to perform tracheostomy care/suctioning, venipuncture (phlebotomy), IV insertion/removal, foley catheter insertion/removal, EKGs and more. PCTs can also hold a national certification.

Do patient care techs do IVs?

No. Medical assistants may not place the needle or start or disconnect the infusion tube of an IV. These procedures are considered invasive, and therefore, not within the medical assistant’s scope of practice. Medical assistants are not allowed to administer medications or injections into the IV line.

Do PCTs insert catheters?

PCT’s put on catheters but they do not put them in. Yes, PCTs are very skilled and are essential to a well ran clinic.

How do I prepare for a PCT interview?

Patient Care Technicians can provide all of the services of a CNA, but they are also able to draw blood and use medical devices as needed.

Can patient care techs start IVs? Are medical assistants allowed to start or disconnect IVs or administer injections or medication into IVs? No. Medical assistants may not place the needle or start or disconnect the infusion tube of an IV. These procedures are considered invasive, and therefore, not within the medical assistant’s scope of practice.
